GTA IV is one of the most beloved entries in the Grand Theft Auto series and the highest rated. The game takes players back to Liberty City, the first location players explore in the first GTA game, and the setting for the series going 3D with GTA 3.

GTA IV has held up really well despite being over a decade old. Thanks to the classic GTA gameplay that had been elevated  for the HD era, the deep story, and of course, the vast amount of exciting characters seen throughout the story.

Jimmy is the head of the Pegorino crime family and serves as the final enemy of Niko in the game. Jimmy kills either Roman or Kate, depending on whether you choose the Deal or Revenge option.

Jon is the head of the Gambetti crime family, and Niko visits him in hospital while he is on his death bed to enact his final wishes. During the game’s ending, a radio news report announces that Jon Gravelli has died in his sleep at the age of 85.

Best Tips

In three instances, you choose two different characters to kill, with your choice having pros and cons depending on who you choose.

When you are given a choice to kill either Playboy X or Dwayne, if Dwayne is killed, you will receive $25,000. However, if you kill Playboy X, you will receive his penthouse as a new safe house and save location along with Claude’s outfit from GTA 3, making this the ideal choice to make.

You will have to take out one of the McReary brothers, either Derrick or Francis, during the game. If you kill Francis, there is no benefit or consequence, but if you choose Derrick, you will be able to call Francis on your phone to clear your wanted level up to three stars, making this the logical choice.

Finally, towards the end of the game, you will have to choose either a Deal or Revenge option. If you choose Deal, Roman will be killed in a future mission, and if you choose Revenge, your girlfriend Kate will be killed. In my opinion, Revenge provides the overall better ending, and Kate’s death doesn’t have as much impact on the game, just you can’t date her anymore. If you decide to kill Roman, you can’t call him for his car services or hang out, and he’s a much better character, so it’s worth keeping him around.

Buying Guide

GTA IV was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in April 2008, followed by a PC port in December 2008. Two sets of expansion DLC were released later on, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.

Unfortunately, GTA IV has never seen a modern rerelease on the PS4, Xbox One, PS5, or Xbox Series X|S. The game was released with the DLC as GTA IV: The Complete Edition and is currently available on PC via Steam and Rockstar Games Launcher. This is the definitive way to play the game today.

Conclusion

GTA IV brought players back to Liberty City for the first time in a mainline game since 2001’s GTA 3 and became the highest rated game in the series, with a score of 98%, making it the third highest-rated game of all time.

It has now been 14 years since players have been able to go to Liberty City. It will likely be a long time until we can again, with the upcoming GTA 6 rumored to be taking place in Vice City. However, this is unconfirmed at the time of writing.
